PROLOGUE

*Blood dripping off the walls… Pain… Screams… Hurt…*

Liz woke up gasping in bed… ‘Another nightmare’ she thought. Ever since the sensei brought her back… She sighed, immediately ridding her mind of those thoughts and got out of bed. It was time for school anyway and she didn’t want to be late on her first day as a senior.

She got dressed in a tight pair of jeans and a deep red, v-neck top. After putting on some make-up and curling her hair she went down for breakfast before leaving to school.

“Good morning mom, dad. What’s going on in the world?”, she asked her father who was reading the paper.
“According to this there’s murders, thefts, accidents… Why do I keep reading this thing? And aren’t you late for school?”, he said addressing Liz.
“I still have ten minutes left, but hey… I get the message. I’m leaving already! I’ll see you guys after school.”

Liz took her keys and got into her car. As she made her way to school, she was singing along with Rihanna’s Umbrella. Before getting out of the car she opened the glove compartment of her car en took out a knife and her gun. She tucked the knife in her boot, put her gun in her handbag and made her way into the school.

Thinking back to the nightmare she had last night, she didn’t notice when she passed some of her friends, who were also involved in a conversation. Liz continued to her locker to take out her books for first period. When she got there her cell phone went off. After checking the caller id she answered.
“Talk to me”

“I have another job for you. The files with all the information you need are in your locker”

Holding the phone between her shoulder and her ear she reached inside the locker to take out the documents that contained the job description. She opened the folder and quickly scanned over them.

“How much?”

“2 million each.”

“When?”

“You have a week.”

“Consider it done.”

She ended the call, put the folder in her bag, took her books for first period and made her way for class… Never noticing the figure behind the corner, who heard the entire conversation…

CHAPTER 1

*Liz POV*

I got in class just in time for first period. I spotted an empty seat in the back of the class and made my way over. I sat down just as Mr. Seligman came in and as he began his class I found myself dreaming away… Thinking back to the summer that just passed.

°Flashback°

After hearing the message from Max’s mother about his destiny I felt like I couldn’t breathe. Max was destined to be with Tess. There were no doubts about that anymore, everything she had been telling ever since she got here was the truth. She was meant to be with Max. There was no place left for me now. It was time to say goodbye and let Max follow his destiny.
I saw Tess talking to Max and I couldn’t take it anymore. I turned around and started to leave but something stopped me. Max. He was holding me back.

“Everything I told you is still true. I love you. Don’t go. Please.” Max wasn’t just pleading with his words, but also with his eyes to not give up on us.. But…

“Max, didn’t you just hear what your mother said? You do have a destiny and I… I can’t get in the way of that. We’re not meant to be.” I felt the tears coming up after saying that… I couldn’t stay here.

“I don’t care about any of that and you know it. Screw destiny. I love you Liz. I want to be with you!” Why did he have to make this so damned difficult?! We’re not meant to be, didn’t he just hear it?

“I’m sorry Max, I can’t…” And after saying that I turned around and left.

I ran all the way down the rock formation and began the long walk through the desert back home. Which really sucked after spending the night running the night from the FBI and not having slept at all… Even with my DNA I am still required to have SOME sleep in order to benefit from my abilities… But hell, complaining wasn’t going to get me home anytime sooner. So I better put a move on it.

As soon as I got home I went up to my room to take a much needed shower. When I got out I found my mom sitting on my bed. I knew she wasn’t here to question me about my whereabouts last night since I told her yesterday that I was going to spend the night at Marias. Wondering what she wanted to talk about, I snapped her out of her reverie to ask her.

“Hey honey, did you have fun at Marias last night?”, she asked.

“Yeah, I did. We just spend the night watching movies and talking.”, I lied.

“That’s nice. But that’s not why I wanted to talk to you actually. I just got a call from your aunt Marissa. She’s leaving for Africa for the summer, another of her humanitarian trips and she was wondering how you’d feel about staying at the house. Just house-sitting.”

This offer really couldn’t have come at a better time. I really needed to get away from Max and from Roswell and now I didn’t even need to come up with a lazy excuse to be able to leave town. Thank God for family!

“Sounds cool. When does she need me there?”

“Well, she’s leaving tomorrow evening, so she was wondering if you wouldn’t mind…”

“… to leave tomorrow? That’s okay. I’ll just start packing my stuff.”

“Okay, your flight leaves tomorrow at four in the afternoon. She suggested you guys meet at the airport so she could give you the keys to the house and to her car. That way you won’t have to call a cab to get to the house. Are you sure you don’t mind leaving on such short notice?” My mom seemed worried about letting me leave and also a bit sad that I’d be away the entire summer. I could understand her point of view, really… But I also really needed to get out of here.

“That’s okay. I don’t mind. Should I call aunt Marissa to let her now I’ll watch the house?”

“That would be nice. She’ll be happy that she won’t have to leave the house without supervision. You know how she hates that.”, mom chuckled.

°End Flashback°

I was pulled out of my thoughts when I realised Mr. Seligman was waiting for me to answer a question.

“Summer holidays are over miss Parker. I would really like for you to pay attention to my class now.”

“I’m sorry Mr. Seligman. I’ll pay attention now.” I answered as the perfect little student. Sighing I leaned back in my seat and continued to feel bored out of my mind. I had already learned all of this, having been thought everything about American history at Manticore.

Manticore. I can’t believe it’s almost been ten years since the escape. We’ve been on the outside for so long now…

But before I can dwell any further on those thoughts the bell rings and I’m off to the next class of the day.
Rounding the corner I bumped into someone, sending all of my books scattered across the floor. Looking up to see who caused this I gasped and realized that my luck had already lasted for too long. I knew that I would have to face them, face him eventually, but I had hoped later rather than sooner.

“Max…”
“Liz… You’re back.”

CHAPTER 2

*Max POV*

Unlike all the others, I was rather happy with the beginning of the new school year. Summer was over and if Maria was right, it meant that Liz would be back in Roswell. At least, that’s what she overheard when she accidently listened in on a conversation between the Parkers.

You see, when Liz left town she didn’t tell anyone where she went, not even Maria. She felt really hurt about that, then she got angry and started blaming me for everything. It took her a while, but eventually she got over it and we started to hang out regularly. I’m happy to say that Maria is now a really good friend of mine. I don’t just see her as Liz’s best friend anymore, but as one of my bests friends as well.

Maria was there for me this summer, always listening when I felt the need to talk about what bothered me, picking me up when I was down over Liz’s absence and in some way, she even helped me deal with what happened in the White Room. We never really talked about it, I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to really talk about it… But she helped me in her way.

“Heyy Girlfriend! You ready for our senior year?”

Talk about the devil! I turn around and see Maria leaning against the locker next to mine with a huge smile on her face. She too had a really difficult summer, with Michael pushing her away and all. That’s why she’s so happy about Liz returning to Roswell.
Knowing Maria, I’m sure there’s going to be a very long talk about running of to God knows where without telling her or bringing her along, but in the end.. They’ll work it out. They’ve been friends forever.

“I think I am. So… You think she’s back?” I ask Maria.

“I don’t know. I haven’t seen her around yet but I’m sure we’ll know soon enough though.”

“I’m sure we will. Look, why don’t you go ahead to class. I just need to go to the bathroom real quick and then I’ll see you in class.”

“Sure. I’ll save you a seat.”

“Thanks”

As I made my way to the bathroom I noticed a familiar looking person walking down the hall in front of me. Liz… She was back! I saw her heading to her locker and decided to follow her. She opened her locker and started to take out some books when her phone went off, right before I got to her. I hid behind the corner so she wouldn’t notice I was there.

She checked the caller id before picking up.

“Talk to me”, she said to the whoever was on the other side of the line.

Who could be calling her? And when did she start answering her phone like that? Usually her voice was kind, soft and gentle. But now…

I saw her reach into her locker and pull out a folder with some papers inside. She quickly scanned over them while she continued talking to the person on the other side of the line.

“How much?”

“…”

“When?”

“…”

How I wish I could hear what the person she was talking to was telling her. This was such a strange phone call…

“Consider it done.”
She hung up the phone, took out her books and made her way to first period before I could get to her. When I heard the warning bell go off I knew I had to hurry or I would be late myself. Not the way I would want the start my senior year of high school.

DAMN

I still hadn’t gone to the bathroom.

CHAPTER 3

*Max POV*

I got to class just in time and took my seat next to Maria. I turned to her to tell her I saw Liz, that she really was back but a stern look from Mr. Swayer made me turn back around in my seat. I could still tell her after class. She wouldn’t mind… Right?

God, she looked so beautiful! Different, definitely different… But she still looked as beautiful as ever!

In the back of my mind I keep replaying the conversation I overheard. I wonder who she was talking to. All I know from that conversation is that she did not only changed the way she looks, but her character as well. She seems… Tougher, stronger almost… I wonder if I we’ll get to share any classes this year. Maybe even be labpartners again. I guess we’ll know by 6th period. With these hopeful thoughts I tried to focus my attention on the rest of the lesson.

As soon as class was over I got up and moved towards Maria. How would she react to the news of Liz being back? Maybe I should take her somewhere more private to tell her the news rather than have her freak out and ask a million questions in the hallway.
Just as I was about to address her I saw that her attention was drawn somewhere else. Michael was at the other end of the hallway and currently they were holding a fierce staring match.

“Are you alright?” I asked her.

“Yeah… I’m OK. It’s just… What does he want from me? He didn’t want anything to do with me for the entire summer and now… Look at him. What am I supposed to make of his behaviour right now?”

“Hey guys! What’s up?” Alex had just walked up to us.

“Alex, hey. I’m good, you?” I answered

“I’m OK. So, what are we talking about?” He asked.

“About my disastrous love life… Or to be more precise: lack there off” Maria answered him.

“Ah, Michael. How about you and I go for a walk? Make fun of Pam Troy and her brainless cheer squad?”

“Alex…” Maria was going to protest, but apparently Alex was having none of it.

“And I won’t take no for an answer! See ya later Max!” He said dragging a grumbling Maria away.

I laughed in myself shaking my head. Alex would never change! I got to know him better over the summer and we had some good times together. Usually they involved cheering either me or Maria up, but still…

As I rounded the corner my thoughts once again drifted off to Liz. Suddenly I felt someone bumping into me, sending all of their books scattered over the floor. I immediately bent down to help pick this person’s books up when I heard a small gasp. Looking up I came face to face with those gorgeous brown eyes that I couldn’t get out of my mind.

“Max…”

God… How I had missed hearing her voice and the way she said my name…

“Liz… You’re back.”

She seemed to be miles away but suddenly snapped out of it. She picked up the rest of her books and got up.

*Liz POV*

“Um yeah… I am.”

God… What kind of lame answer is that? He can see I’m back! No need to spell it out…

“When did you get back?” Max asks me shyly.

I see him reach up and scratch his ear. He seems nervous… But then again, so am I. Probably not for the same reasons… But still…

“A couple of days ago, actually.”

He seems hurt, disappointed… that I didn’t immediately went out to find him.

“Oh… You look good. I mean… Wherever it is you were for the summer… It obviously did you a lot of good.”

I wish I could say the same for him…

“Florida… I went to Florida for the summer. I have an aunt who lives at Miami Beach.”

Mentioning Miami Beach brings up a lot of memories. Good ones, really good ones actually and I can’t help but smile thinking of…

“Wow… You must’ve had an interesting summer.”
“It was okay.”

Akward!

“Listen Liz… I know that things got a little weird before you left. A lot happened and I was wondering if you know… Maybe we could get together sometime to talk about it? I have the night off and I thought that if you weren’t busy tonight…”

Oh damn…

“No… I mean, I’m not busy tonight. How about we meet on my balcony… Say 8.?

Better to get it over and done with… I really don’t want him to get his hopes up, but seeing that smile on his face tells me it’s already to late for that.

“8 is great.”

“Okay… I better go now. I’ll see you later.”

“Sure.”

I turn around and start to walk away when his voice stops me once again.

“Oh and Liz?”

I turn around to face him.

“Yeah?”

“It’s great to see you. I’m happy you’re home.”

I smile before nodding and walking away… Feeling bad about what I know I have to do.
